Emerging Concepts/Rapidly growing companies

Destin, FL-based TROPICAL SMOOTHIE CAFÉ AND
DELI (founded 1997), has increased by 32 units,
from 181 to 213 (18% growth). They have now entered
into the states of HI, KY, and IN due to the
expansion. Other trading areas are AL, AR, AZ, CA,
FL, GA, IA, LA, MI, MN, MO, MT, NC, NV, NY, OH, OK,
SC, TN, TX, VA, WA, and WI. The cafes are fast
casual, with seating for about 70 (1750 sq ft).
Locations are open for breakfast, lunch and dinner,
with a per person check average of $3-$8.
Catering is also available. More than 90% of
locations are franchised.


Bensalem, PA-based RITA’S ITALIAN ICE
(founded 1984), has increased by 41 units during the
period, from 361 to 402 locations (11% growth).
During the prior period (Mar ’06 to Jun ’06), they
opened 19 units (5.5% growth). Locations are mostly
take-out, with a per person check average of $2-$6.

Average unit size is 20 seats (1000 sq
ft). All locations are franchised. Locations are
in CT, DC, DE, FL, MD, NJ, NY, OH, PA,
RI, SC, VA, and WV.


STOCKADE COMPANIES of Hutchinson, KS has
increased 2 units for their Montana
Mike’s steakhouse concept from 22 to 24 locations
(9% concept growth). Locations are family/casual
style steakhouses with full bar service and seating
for about 300. Per person check average is $8-
$20. The company now operates the following
concepts: Coyote Canyon (7), Montana Mike’s
Steakhouse (24) and Sirloin Stockade (48). There
are now 79 total locations in AR, IA, IL, IN, KS,
KY, MO, OK, SD and TX. Locations are
franchised.

SIGNATURE RESTAURANTS of Philadelphia, PA
(founded 1970) has opened a new concept called
Mia’s, an upscale restaurant they opened in Atlantic
City, NJ featuring Mediterranean cuisine. The
company grew from 3 to 4 locations (33% growth).
Their other concepts are upscale French cuisine
locations with full bar, seating for about 100 and a
check average of $30-$50+ per person. Other current
locations are; Brasserie Perrier, Georges' and Le
Bec- Fin. Locations are in PA and NJ.

Units Decreased

Los Angeles, CA-based GREAT CIRCLE FAMILY
FOODS, a franchisee of Krispy Kreme restaurants
in CA, has decreased by 12 units, from 24 to 12
locations (50% downsizing). During the prior period
(Mar ’06 to Jun ’06), the company had decreased by 4
units (14% downsizing).

Krispy Kreme’s corporate headquarters is in
Winston-Salem, NC. They are currently in
negotiations to acquire Great Circle Family Foods
and all their units.


MEETING GROUNDS of St Joseph, MN (founded in
1994) has gone out of business. They closed 4 of
their 5 locations and sold their remaining unit.
Stores were quick service/ bakery café concepts, with a
$2-$6 per person check average. They were all
located in MN.
