Emerging concepts
Milwaukee, WI-based MO’S RESTAURANTS has
increased 2 units for its Monsoon Wok and Lounge
concept, from 1 to 3 locations. Overall company
increase was from 7 to 9 restaurants (29% growth).
One of these locations opened in TX, marking the
company’s first unit in that state. Other locations
are in IL, IN, and WI. The concepts are mostly
upscale, with per person check averages of $15-$50+.
Locations are an average 150 seats (3500 sq
ft). Catering and banquet services are available.
Concepts include Moceans (1), Mocha (1), Monsoon Wok
and Lounge (3), Mo’s Cucina (1), Mo’s Irish Pub (1),
and Mo’s Steakhouse (2).
MYRIAD RESTAURANT GROUP (founded 1985)
headquartered in NY, NY has opened a new Thai
concept called Mai House in NYC. This company
specializes in upscale restaurants with full bars,
seating for about 250 with check averages of more than
$50 per person. There are now 12 units: Centrico (1),
Coach House (1), Montrachet (1), Nobu Next Door (1),
Nobu (2), Nobu Fifty-seven (1), Nobu Fifty-seven
(1), Proof (1), Pulse (1), Rubicon (1), Tribeca
Grill (1) and Mai House (1). They are located in CA,
KY, MA and NY. Managing partners operate
locations.
New York, NY-based STARWICH SALADS AND
SANDWICHES (founded 2004), has increased 4 units
during the period, from 5 to 9 locations (80%
growth). They have expanded into MA, VA, and NJ
(most other locations are in NY). Service is quick
casual and is open for breakfast, lunch and dinner.
Per person check average is $4-$10. Restaurants
seat about 20 (1000 sq ft). Catering and delivery
services are available.
Chino, CA-based TACO FACTORY (founded 1984),
has opened 2 units, from 14 to 16 (14% growth).
Locations are quick serve and they have a per person
check average of $3-$8. Beer and wine is served at
some locations. Restaurants have seating for about
30 (1000 sq ft) and are open for breakfast, lunch
and dinner. Catering and delivery services are
offered. All locations are in CA.
Chantilly, VA-based FIREHOOK BAKERY AND
COFFEEHOUSE (founded 1992), has grown 3 units,
from 8 to 11 (38% growth). Service is mostly
take-out with a per person check average of $3-$8.
There is seating for about 10 (1000 sq ft). They
offer both catering and delivery. Locations are in
VA and the District of Columbia.
PANCHERO'S MEXICAN GRILL of Coralville, IA
(founded 1992) has added 7 units (21% growth)
during the period. The restaurants feature fast
casual Mexican food with seating for about 80.
They serve beer and wine and have a per person check
average of $4-$10. There are now 41 locations in
CO, FL, IA, IL, MI, MN, NE, SD and WI. 59% of
locations are franchised.
KING'S SEAFOOD CO of Costa Mesa, CA (founded
1945) has opened a new location of its King’s
Fish House concept. This, in addition to prior
period expansions creates a 15% annual growth.
Locations are upscale with full bar, seating for 200
and a per person check average of more than $40.
There are now 15 locations in CA and NV: 555 East
Steakhouse (1), I Cugini (1), King's Fish House
(10), Lou & Mickey's (1), Ocean Ave Seafood (1) and
Water Grill (1). Locations are company owned.

Units Decreased
TOM'S BBQ CHICAGO STYLE (founded 1988) of
Mesa, AZ has closed one location for a total of 3
closures during the last two periods (50%
downsizing). Locations are family/casual service.
They serve beer and wine and have seating for about
90. Per person check average is $4-$10. There are
now 3 company owned locations in AZ.
