We publish net unit growth from (each company has their own four-month cycle, percentages are not annualized as a result) one four-month period to the next. This is performed by re-verifying net growth figures of approximately 1,000 companies per month. Once our researchers identify the following growth results from our research efforts, we highlight a new round of results each week in our newsletter. Featured growth stories are only a fraction of the growth stories received by clients.

September results are now posted. October will be posted next week. The index has climbed for 5 straight months. We have completed our first 12-month period and have seen a 3% overall increase in the index from year to year.

Growing and emerging concepts

Phoenix, AZ-based DUNERS PIZZA (founded 2004) has opened 2 units, from 2 to 4 (100% growth). These quick serve pizzerias are open for breakfast, lunch and dinner. Locations serve beer, with seating for around 50 at some units. Delivery is available. All locations are in AZ.

Lone Tree, CO-based THE EGG & I (founded 1987) has opened 4 units, from 19 to 23 (26% growth) and entered into the state of UT. Other locations are in CO, TX, and WY. This concept was also featured in our 6/13/06 newsletter (6% growth). These family/casual, breakfast and lunch restaurants have seating for about 125, with a per person check average of $3-$8. Units are more than 70% franchised.

AU BON PAIN headquartered in Boston, MA (founded 1978) has increased by 6 units, from 244 to 250 (2% growth). Units are fast casual bakery cafés with seating for about 30. The check average is around $3-$8 per person and stores are open for breakfast, lunch and dinner. Locations are in CT, DC, FL, GA, IL, IN, MA, MD, ME, MI, MN, MO, NH, NJ, NY, OH, PA, RI, TX, VA, South Korea, Thailand and Taiwan. About half of the units are franchised.

GUTHRIE'S CHICKEN FINGERS based in Birmingham, AL (founded 1965) has increased by 4 units, from 50 to 54 (8% growth). These are quick serve chicken restaurants with seating for about 125. The per person check average is around $3-$6. Locations are 50% franchised and are in AL, FL, GA and MS.

STREETS OF NEW YORK PIZZA of Phoenix, AZ (founded 1976) has increased by 2 units, from 25 to 27 (8% growth). These are family/casual Italian and pizza restaurants serving beer and wine. Seating is for around 80 and the per person check average is around $6-$15. All locations are in AZ and about half are franchised. There are plans to open a new location in Phoenix, AZ soon.

RICKY'S RESTAURANTS of Burnaby, BC (founded 1960) has increased by 3 units, from 54 to 57 (6% growth). These are family/casual restaurants with full bar and seating for about 125. The per person check average is around $6-$15+. Locations are more than 90% franchised and are located in AB, BC, ON, SK and YT.

Burger King franchisee, HEARTLAND FOOD CORP of Downers Grove, IL has increased by 16 units, from 251 to 267 (6% growth). Units are located in IL, IN, MI, NC, SC and WI.

Dallas, TX-based DICK'S LAST RESORT (founded 1985) has opened a new unit, entering into the state of NV. Increase was from 6 to 7 units (17% growth). Other locations are in CA, IL, MA, SC, and TX. This family/casual bar & grill concept is open for lunch and dinner hours, with an $8-$20 per person check average. Seating is for around 250. Special events facilities are available.

Edmonton, AB, Canada-based PIZZA 73 (founded 1985) has opened 8 units, from 44 to 52 (18% growth). The restaurants are take-out/delivery pizza shops, open for lunch and dinner. Trading areas are AB, BC, and SK.

Grants Pass, OR-based DUTCH BROS COFFEE (founded 1992) has opened 20 units, from 94 to 114 (21% growth) and expanded to include the states of AZ and NV. We most recently featured this concept in our 4/3/07 newsletter (12% growth, entered ID). This company has had a 36% growth over the last year. These are take-out/drive-thru coffee shops, with a $1-$4 per person check average. Meal periods are breakfast, lunch and dinner hours. Trading areas are AZ, CA, ID, NV, OR, and WA. More than 80% of units are franchised.

New Orleans, LA-based EMERIL'S HOMEBASE INC (founded 1990) has entered into the state of MS with the opening of their latest concept, Emeril's Gulf Coast Fish House (1 unit). Overall company increase was from 9 to 10 (11% growth). Other concepts include Delmonico Steakhouse (1), Emeril's Delmonico (1), Emeril's New Orleans Fish House (1), Emeril's Restaurant (4), Emeril's Tchoup Choup (1), and Nola Restaurant (1). Concepts are upscale steak & seafood restaurants, with a $15-$50+ per person check average. All units have a full bar, with banquet facilities available. Locations seat about 225. Trading areas are FL, GA, LA, MS, and NV. A new concept called Table 10 is scheduled to open at The Palazzo in Las Vegas this January.

Murray, UT-based WINGER'S GRILL & BAR (founded 1993) has opened 2 units for the Winger's concept, from 36 to 38 (8% concept growth) and entered into the state of WA. Winger's is a family/casual bar & grill concept, with a $6-$15+ per person check average. Most locations are open for lunch and dinner only, some also serve breakfast. Catering platters are available. Winger's also operates a more upscale Italian concept, called Tucci's Cucina Italiana (2 units). The restaurant concepts trade in the states of ID, NV, OR, UT, WA, and WY. About 70% of Winger's units are franchised.

TACO BUENO headquartered in Farmers Branch, TX (founded 1967) has increased by 7 units, from 169 to 176 (4% growth) and expanded into NM. The company has grown by 30 units over the past three periods from 146 to 176 (21% one-year growth). Units are quick serve and open for lunch and dinner. Seating is for around 50 and the per person check average is around $3-$8. Locations are in AR, KS, MO, NC, NE, NM, OK, SC and TX. Less than 20% are franchised.

RITA'S ITALIAN ICE headquartered in Trevose, PA (founded 1984) has increased by 60 units, from 436 to 496 (14% growth) and expanded into GA, MA and NC. Over the last three periods, the company has grown by 135 units, from 361 to 496 (37% one-year growth). These are mostly take-out shops. Units are open for lunch and dinner and the per person check average is around $2-$6. Other units are in CT, DC, DE, FL, MD, NJ, NY, NC, PA, RI, SC, VA and WV. Locations are more than 90% franchised.
