A weekly newsletter covering public and private restaurant chains featuring under-reported unique facts relating to growth. Pertinent information is gathered, verified and analyzed in-house using proprietary methods created in our research and library departments.

Regarding growth stories listed:

We publish net unit growth from (each company has their own four-month cycle, percentages are not annualized as a result) one four-month period to the next. This is performed by re-verifying net growth figures of approximately 1,000 companies per month. Once our researchers identify the following growth results from our research efforts, we highlight a new round of results each week in our newsletter. Featured growth stories are only a fraction of the growth stories received by clients.

Growing and emerging concepts

DAGWOOD'S SANDWICH SHOPPES based in Clearwater, FL (founded 2006) has increased by 6 units, from 3 to 9 (200% growth). These are quick serve sandwich shops with seating for about 50. The per person check average is around $3-$8. Locations are franchised and are currently in AL, FL, KY, LA and MO. There are plans to open 11 more units by years end and expand into GA, SC and TX.

Shreveport, LA-based MONJUNIS ITALIAN CAFE & GROCERY (founded 1987) has opened 2 units during the period, from 5 to 7 (40% growth). These are family/casual Italian restaurants, open for lunch and dinner, with a full bar. Per person check average is $10-$30. Seating is for about 75. Catering and private party facilities are available. All but 1 location is franchised. All restaurants are in LA.

WEBER GRILL headquartered in Palatine, IL (founded 1989) has opened their first IN location. The overall company increase is from 3 to 4 units (33% growth). These are family/casual restaurants with full bar. Seating is for about 250 and the per person check average is around $8-$20. Banquets and catering are offered. Locations are company owned and are in IL and IN.

Golden, CO-based GOOD TIMES BURGERS & FROZEN CUSTARD (NASDAQ: GTIM; founded 1987) has increased by 4 units, from 50 to 54 (8% growth). These are take-out burger and ice cream restaurants, with a $2-$6 per person check average. Locations are open for lunch and dinner, and trade in the states of CO, ID, ND, and WY. Around 30% of units are franchised.

Lake Forest, CA-based JOHNNY ROCKETS (founded 1986) has opened 15 units, from 203 to 218 (7% growth). This concept was last featured in our 4/10/07 newsletter (4% growth). These are family/casual burger restaurants, open for lunch and dinner, with a $4-$10 per person check average. Beer and wine is served. Units have seating for around 80 to 100. Trading areas are AL, AZ, CA, CO, CT, DC, FL, GA, IL, IN, KY, MA, MD, MI, MN, MO, NJ, NM, NV, NY, OH, PA, RI, SC, TN, TX, VA, WA, the province of ON, Canada, and 7 other countries.

Rancho Santa Margarita, CA-based COTTI FOODS, a Pizza Hut and Taco Bell franchisee, has opened 7 Taco Bell units, from 51 to 58, for an overall company increase of 57 to 64 (11% company growth). They also operate 6 Pizza Hut stores. All units are in CA.

Tustin, CA-based MIMI'S CAFÉ (founded 1978) has increased by 7 units, from 109 to 116 (6% growth) and entered into the state of IL. We last mentioned this concept in our 3/13/07 newsletter (3% growth). These are family/casual restaurants, serving American style food. Meal periods are breakfast, lunch and dinner, with an $8-$20 per person check average. Beer and wine is served. Seating is available for about 200. Trading areas are AR, AZ, CA, CO, FL, GA, IL, KS, KY, MO, NC, NE, NM, NV, OH, OK, SC, TN, TX, and UT, with locations to open in Columbia, MD (October) and in Sterling, VA later this fall. Mimi's Café is a wholly owned subsidiary of Columbus, OH-based Bob Evans Farms Restaurants (NASDAQ: BOBE).

Irvine, CA-based JUICE IT UP (founded 1995) has opened 17 units, from 123 to 140 (14% growth) and entered into the states of NY and NV. Other trading areas are AZ, CA, FL, TN, and TX. This company was last featured in our 3/20/07 newsletter (4% growth). This is a take-out, juice/smoothie concept. Operating times are breakfast, lunch and dinner hours. Per person check average is $2-$6. More than 90% of locations are franchised.

Norcross, GA-based MAGGIEMOOS ICE CREAM & TREATERY (founded 1989) has increased by 18 units, from 195 to 213 (9% growth) and entered into the state of NH. This chain was last covered in our 3/13/07 newsletter, then with a 4% growth and expansion into 2 states. These are quick serve ice cream shops, open for lunch and dinner hours, with a $2-$6 per person check average. Most units have seating for about 10. Catering services are available. Stores are in the states of AL, AZ, CA, CO, CT, DC, FL, GA, IA, ID, IL, IN, KS, KY, LA, MA, MD, ME, MI, MN, MO, MS, NC, NE, NH, NJ, NY, OH, OK, OR, PA, SC, TN, TX, UT, VA, WA, WI, WV, and WY, with a Fayetteville, AR location opening this fall. All locations are franchised.

VALLS MANAGEMENT GROUP based in Miami, FL has opened 2 new concepts increasing total units from 15 to 17 (13% growth). The new concepts are Four Wheels Restaurant (1) and Versailles El Doral (1). Other concepts are Café (1), Casa Juancho (1), El Viajante (1), La Carreta (9), La Palma (1) and Versailles (2). Units tend to be family/casual with catering and seating for about 175. Cuisines include Spanish and Carribbean with a per person check average of around $8-$20. All are company owned and located in FL.

RAISING CANE'S headquartered in Baton Rouge, LA (founded 1996) has increased by 5 units from 56 to 61 (9% growth) and expanded into MN. These are quick-serve chicken restaurants with seating for about 70. The per person check average is around $3-$8 and catering is offered. Locations are less than 20% franchised and are in AL, CO, GA, LA, MN, MS, NE, NV, OH, OK, TX and VA. We previously wrote about this concept in our 8/29/2006 newsletter (19% growth) and in our 1/30/2007 newsletter (27% growth).

BUBBA GUMP SHRIMP CO of San Clemente, CA (founded 1996) has increased by 3 units for their Bubba Gump concept, from 25 to 28 (12% concept growth) and expanded into TN. The overall company growth is from 30 to 33. Per person check averages are $10-$30+. Current concepts are Bubba Gump Shrimp Co (28), Capi's Italian Kitchen (1), Mai Tai Bar (3) and Rusty Pelican (1). Units tend to be family/casual with seating for about 200. Cuisines include Seafood, Italian and Hawaiian. Locations are in CA, CO, FL, HI, IL, LA, MN, NY, SC and TN.

OSI Restaurant Partners concept, CARRABBA'S ITALIAN GRILL based in Tampa, FL (founded 1986) has increased by 11 units, from 229 to 240 (5% growth). These are family/casual Italian restaurants with full bar. Seating is for about 250 and the per person check average is $10-$30. Locations are in AL, AR, AZ, CO, CT, FL, GA, ID, IL, IN, KS, KY, LA, MA, MD, MI, MO, NC, NE, NH, NJ, NM, NV, NY, OH, OK, PA, RI, SC, TN, TX, UT, VA and WI.

Correction: We stated that Garlic Jim's was #10 on July's Top Ten list of fast growers, they were actually #6.

Correction: We listed Fleming's Prime Steakhouse as having increased by 10 units in their research period, the actual number was 8.
