A weekly newsletter covering public and private restaurant chains featuring under-reported unique facts relating to growth. Pertinent information is gathered, verified and analyzed in-house using proprietary methods created in our research and library departments.

Regarding growth stories listed:

We publish net unit growth from (each company has their own four-month cycle, percentages are not annualized as a result) one four-month period to the next. This is performed by re-verifying net growth figures of approximately 1,000 companies per month. Once our researchers identify the following growth results from our research efforts, we highlight a new round of results each week in our newsletter. Featured growth stories are only a fraction of the growth stories received by clients.

Growing and emerging concepts

Wichita, KS-based company Timberline Steakhouse & Grill has opened 3 units for its FREDDY'S FROZEN CUSTARD concept, from 11 to 14 (27% concept growth). Overall company increase was from 15 to 18 (20% company growth). The Freddy's concept was previously mentioned in our 10/10/06 newsletter (50% concept growth; entered 3 states). Freddy's restaurants are quick service ice cream shops, open for lunch and dinner, with a $3-$8 per person check average. Timberline Steakhouses (4 locations) are family/casual restaurants with a full bar and seating for about 250. The company trades in the states of AZ, KS, MO, OK, and TX. 21% of Freddy's units are franchised.

Everett, WA-based GARLIC JIM'S FAMOUS GOURMET PIZZA (founded 2003) has opened 7 units, from 39 to 46 (18% growth) and entered into the state of CO. We last profiled this concept in our 2/20/07 newsletter, then with an 18% growth. Locations are mostly take-out/delivery, with some locations offering limited seating. Beer and wine is served at select locations. Units are open for lunch and dinner. Trading areas are in AZ, CO, CA, OR, PA, and WA. More than 90% of locations are franchised. The company ranked # 10 on our July top 10 emerging concepts list.

Manhattan Beach, CA-based ROBEK'S FRUIT SMOOTHIES & HEALTHY EATS (founded 1996) has opened 12 units, from 110 to 122 (11% growth). We most recently featured this concept in our 2/20/07 newsletter (15% growth). This is a quick service, juice/smoothie concept, open for lunch and dinner hours, with a $2-$6 per person check average. Units have seating for about 10. Trading areas are AZ, CA, CT, DC, FL, GA, HI, IL, KS, MA, MD, NM, NY, OH, TX, VA, and WA, with a Charlotte, NC store to open this fall. 99% of locations are franchised.

Gilbert, AZ-based NATIVE NEW YORKER (founded 1979) has increased by 3 units, from 15 to 18 (20% growth). These restaurants are family/casual American sports bar and grills, specializing in chicken wings. Per person check average is $6-$15+. Meal periods are lunch and dinner. Seating is for about 200. Catering platters are available. About half of units are franchised. All locations are in AZ.

Chicago, IL-based POTBELLY SANDWICH WORKS (founded 1977) has increased by 10 units, from 137 to 147 (7% growth) and entered into the state of PA. This concept was previously mentioned in our 2/27/07 newsletter (11% growth). These quick service sandwich shops are open for lunch and dinner, with a $3-$8 per person check average. Seating is for about 40. Catering and delivery are available at most locations. Trading areas are DC, IL, IN, MD, MI, MN, OH, PA, TX, VA, and WI.

New York, NY-based GLAZIER GROUP (founded 1985) has opened 2 units for their Strip House concept, from 5 to 7, entering into the state of NV. Other concepts are Bridgewaters (1), Michael Jordan's (1), Monkey Bar (1), Twenty-Four Fifth (1), and Westminister Ballroom (1). Overall company increase was from 10 to 12 (20% growth). The restaurant concepts are upscale steakhouses, open for lunch and dinner, with a $15-50+ per person check average. Seating is for about 250. Catering and banquet facilities are available. All locations have a full bar. Restaurants trade in the states of FL, NJ, NV, NY, and TX.

Gaithersburg, MD-based JERRY'S SUBS & PIZZA (founded 1954) has opened 5 units, from 96 to 101 (5% growth). These quick service pizza/sandwich shops are open for lunch and dinner, with a $2-$6 per person check average. Units seat about 60. Catering is available. Locations are in the states of DC, DE, MD, PA, VA, and WV. More than 90% of locations are franchised.

Applebee's franchise, THE ROSE GROUP based in Newtown, PA has opened 3 units for their new concept - Corner Bakery. The overall company increase is from 54 to 57 (6% growth). Concepts are Applebee's (54) and Corner Bakery (3). Locations are in MD, NJ and PA. There are plans to open a total of 25 Corner Bakery locations over the next 7 years.

AMICI'S EAST COAST PIZZERIA based in San Mateo, CA (founded 1987) has opened a new location in Vacaville, CA increasing units from 8 to 9 (13% growth). These are family/casual restaurants featuring pizza and Italian cuisine. Seating is for about 70 and beer and wine are served. The per person check average is around $6-$12+. Stores are company owned and located in CA.

OSI Restaurant Partners concept, FLEMING'S PRIME STEAKHOUSE of Newport Beach, CA (founded 1998) has increased by 10 units, from 45 to 55 (22% growth). Locations are upscale with full bar and seating for about 250. The check average is around $15-$50+ per person and banquets are offered. Locations are in AL, AZ, CA, CO, FL, GA, IA, IL, IN, LA, MA, MD, MI, MO, NE, NC, NJ, NV, OH, OK, PA, TN, TX, UT, VA and WI.

ZAXBY'S headquartered in Athens, GA (founded 1990) has increased by 26 units, from 366 to 392 (7% growth) and expanded into VA. These are fast casual chicken restaurants with seating for about 90. The per person check average is around $3-$8. Locations are in AL, AR, FL, GA, KY, MS, NC, SC, TN and VA. About half the units are franchised.

Burger King franchisee, SCHUSTER of Columbus, GA has increased by 2 units, from 61 to 63 (3% growth). Locations are in GA and AL.
