Emerging Concepts/Trading area expansion


West Carrollton, OH-based FRICKER’S
(founded in 1985), has increased 2 units during
the period, growing from 16 to 18 units (13%
growth). Also they have expanded into the state of
MI (all others are in IN and OH). These family
style sports bar restaurants seat about 125 people
and are open for both lunch and dinner. Check
averages are about $6-$15 per person. Private
parties are available. Locations are all company
owned.

SHARKY'S WOODFIRED MEXICAN GRILL (founded in
1992) based in Agoura Hills, CA has expanded into
UT. They are a family style Mexican concept that
average 100 seats and serve beer and wine. There are
now 18 stores in CA and UT. Locations are 50-60%
franchised and per person check averages are
$6-$12.

ROSA MEXICANO (founded in 1984) of New York,
NY has expanded to Palm Beach, FL. There are now a
total of 7 company locations in DC, FL, GA and NY.
They also operate a concept named City Grill (6
stores are Rosa Mexicano and 1 is City Grill). All
locations are upscale and offer full bar service and
seat around 200. Per person check average is between
$15-$50+.



Re-emerging concepts

 

HOOTERS the Atlanta, GA-based sports bar
concept (founded in 1983) has grown by 15 units during
the period growing from 425 to 440 locations.
During the prior period (December ’05 to April ’06),
they expanded by 11 units, and also by 11 units in the
prior four-month period. (August ’05 to December
’05). Each restaurant seats approximately 200
people, with check averages of $6-$15 per person.
Catering is also available. Slightly more than half
of locations are franchised. Restaurants are
located in the states of AK, AL, AR, AZ, CA, CO, CT,
DE, FL, GA, HI, IA, ID, IL, IN, KS, KY, LA, MA, MD,
MI, MN, MO, MS, NC, ND, NE, NH, NJ, NM, NV, NY, OH,
OK, OR, PA, RI, SC, TN, TX, UT, VA, VT, WA, WI, WV,
and in the District of Columbia. Canadian locations
are in the provinces of AB, MB, and ON. The company
also operates in 19 other countries worldwide.

COUSIN’S SUBS (founded in 1972) based in
Menomonee Falls, WI has increased 8 units during the
period. They are a quick service sandwich chain
that average around 20 seats. There are now 165
locations in AZ, CA, CO, IA, IL, MI, MN, MO, ND, TX
and WI. Between 70 to 80% of the units are franchised.

 



 

Decreasing units


New Rochelle, NY-based MAUI TACOS (founded in
1993), has decreased 3 units during the period, from
21 down to 18 locations (14% downsizing). This
quick service Mexican restaurant chain averages
about 2000 square feet per unit, with a check
average of $2-$6 per person. Catering and delivery
services are offered. More than 90% of locations
are franchised. Locations are currently in the
states of CA, HI, ID, MN, NC, NJ, NY, TX, UT and in
the District of Columbia. They are now no longer
trading in the state of AL.

Chicago, IL-based LEVY RESTAURANTS (founded
in 1978), has closed 7 restaurant concepts, bringing
the company’s total from 23 to 16 restaurant
locations during the period (30% downsizing), and
pulled its restaurant operations out of AZ. The
restaurants they closed were Bistro 100, Cerise, Dos
Hermanos, Eadie’s Kitchen, Il Palazzetto, Mia Torre,
and Mrs. Levy’s Deli. The company’s remaining
restaurants are: Bistro 110, Bistro Toujours, Café
Spiaggia, Curly’s Pub, Fox Sports Skybox, Fulton’s
Crabhouse, Fulton’s on the River, Galero Grill,
Gotham City Restaurant & Bar, Jake Melnick’s,
Portobello Yacht Club, Shore Restaurant & Beach Bar,
Spiaggia, Spratt’s Kitchen, Wellshire Inn, and
Wolfgang Puck Café. All concepts are large and
mostly upscale with check averages over $15 to $50+
per person, serving a multitude of different
cuisines. Major banquet and catering services are
offered. Restaurants are now located in the states
of CA, CO, FL, IL, NC, UT, and WI. The company is
also a major B&I operator at sports arenas and
stadiums.
