Emerging Concepts/Trading areas


Denver, CO-based ANTHONY’S PIZZA & PASTA
(founded in 1984), has grown by two units over
the period, from 17 to 19 (12% increase). The
restaurants are mostly quick serve, have beer and
wine, and offer many Italian entrees as well as pizza.
Checks average between $2-12 per person. Over 80%
of locations are franchised, all of which are
located in CO. New locations are opening this fall
in Conifer, Lone Tree, and Aurora, CO.

VINNY'S ITALIAN GRILL & PIZZERIA of Forest,
VA (founded in 1998) has opened 3 new units during
the period (25% growth). The stores are
family/casual and average 100 seats with a check
average of $6-$15. There are now 15 locations in VA
and NC. There are plans to open 2 more VA locations
by November 2006.

JIMANO'S PIZZERIA based in Gurnee, IL
(founded in 1998) has expanded into WI. They have
opened their first two WI stores this period,
expanding from 7-9 locations (29% increase).
Locations serve beer and wine and have a check
average of $4-$10. Current locations are in IL and
WI.

JITTERY JOE'S COFFEE of Athens, GA (founded
in 1994) has grown by 60% this period. The company
has opened 3 new units bringing their total to 8
units. Locations are open all day and have around 20
seats. 50-60% of locations are franchised. All
locations are in GA.



Continually growing concept

 

JIMMY JOHN’S (founded in 1983) has opened 51 new stores this period (15%
growth). There are now 397 franchised sandwich shops.
Locations are in AL, AR, AZ, CO, CA, FL, GA, IA, ID, IL,
IN, KS, KY, MD, MI, MN, MO, NC, ND, NE, NV, NY, OH,
OK, PA, SC, SD, TN, TX, UT, VA, WA, WI and WV.
There are plans to open 60 more locations by the end
of 2006 and 150 units in 2007.

 



Re-emerging concept


Bridgewater, PA-based BRUSTER’S REAL ICE
CREAM (founded in 1989), has increased 22 units
(8.6% increase), from 233 to 255 now open. This
quick serve, ice cream chain averages about 1000
square feet per unit. More than 90% of locations are
franchised. Locations are in the states of AL, AR,
DE, FL, GA, IN, KY, MD, MS, NC, NH, NY, OH, PA, SC,
TN, TX and VA.

Decreased units

 

Carlsbad, CA-based CATALINA RESTAURANT
GROUP(founded in 1948), has decreased 7
units for its CARROWS RESTAURANT concept, from 102
to 95 locations, and has closed one unit for its
COCO’S BAKERY concept, from 118 to 117. This
represents an overall company decrease of 8 units
decreasing from 220 to 212 (3.6% decrease). Also, the company no longer
operates in OR. Their concepts are family/casual
and they are open for breakfast, lunch and dinner.
All locations serve beer and wine. Units average
about 3000 square feet. Restaurants currently
operate in the states of AZ, CA, CO, NM, NV, TX, and
WA.

Columbus, OH-based DONATO’S PIZZA (founded in
1963) has closed 5 units over the last four
months, from 179 to 174 (2.8% decrease). They no
longer trade in the states of PA and NJ. Current
locations are in AL, FL, IN, KY, OH. These family
style pizzeria restaurants are open for lunch and
dinner and serve beer and wine. Units seat around
150. Between 20 and 30% of locations are franchised.
