Growing and emerging concepts

BIG BURRITO RESTAURANT GROUP headquartered in Pittsburgh, PA (founded 1993) has increased by 2 units, from 14 to 16 (14% growth). The company opened a new Mad Mex location in Cranberry, PA and also a new concept called Café Phipps. Locations tend to be family/casual with full bar and seating for about 200. Current concepts are Casbah (1), Eleven (1), Kaya (1), Mad Mex (9), Soba (1), Umi (1), Warhal Café (1) and Café Phipps (1). Cuisines for the different concepts vary from Mexican to Asian, American and Sushi. Locations are company owned and are in OH and PA.

CHEEBURGER CHEEBURGER of Fort Myers, FL (founded 1986) has increased by 2 units, from 61 to 63 (3% growth) and expanded into CA and MO. These are family/casual service restaurants with seating for about 70. Beer and wine is served and the per person check average is around $6-$15+. Locations are more than 90% franchised and are in AL, AR, AZ, CA, CO, FL, LA, MD, MI, MO, NC, NJ, NY, PA, SC, TN and VA.

EAST COAST SALOONS headquartered in New York, NY (founded 1977) has increased by 2 units for their Mcfadden's concept from 8 to 10 (25% concept growth) and expanded into TN. The company also added a 2nd unit for their Calico Jack's concept. The overall company growth is from 13 to 16 units (23% growth). Locations are family/casual with full bar and seating for about 300. The check average is around $10-$20 per person. Catering and banquets are offered. Locations are company owned and are in DC, IL, KY, MA, NY, OH, PA and TN. Current concepts are Burke's Bar (1), Calico Jack's (2), Makers Lounge (1), Mcfadden's (10) and Sully's Saloon (2).

LEO'S CONEY ISLAND based in Birmingham, MI (founded 1972) has increased by 2 units, from 26 to 28 (8% growth). Units are family/casual with seating for about 100. The per person check average is around $3-$8. Catering is available. Units are more than 90% franchised and are in MI.

MILIO'S SANDWICHES headquartered in Madison, WI (founded 1989) has increased by 6 units, from 43 to 49 (14% growth) and expanded into NE. Units are take-out and delivery with a check average of around $3-$6 per person. They are 31% franchised and located in IA, MN, NE and WI.

B.R. GUEST RESTAURANTS of New York, NY (founded 1987) has added a new location of their Dos Caminos concept, from 3 to 4 units (33% concept growth). This restaurant group features upscale units with full bar and seating for around 250. The per person check average is around $30-$50+. There are currently 17 units open, Atlantic Grill (1), Blue Fin (1), Blue Water Grill (2), David Burke's Primehouse (1), Dos Caminos (4), Fiamma Trattoria (2), Isabella's (1), Level V (1), Ocean Grill (1), Ruby Foo's (2) and Vento (1). Cuisines vary by concept including Seafood, Steak, Mexican, Italian and Asian. Locations are in IL, NV and NY. There are plans to open a new concept in New York, NY called Primehouse New York in September '07.

Minneapolis, MN-based BUFFALO WILD WINGS (NASDAQ: BWLD founded 1982) has increased by 9 units during the last 4-month period, from 435 to 444 (2% growth). We last featured this company in our 10/31/06 newsletter (4% growth, had entered into OR). The restaurants are family casual, specializing in Buffalo wings. Check average is about $8-$20 per person, open for lunch and dinner, with a full bar. Seating is for about 200. About 70% of units are franchised. Trading areas are AL, AR, AZ, CA, CO, CT, DE, FL, GA, IA, IL, IN, KS, KY, LA, MD, MI, MN, MO, MS, MT, NC, ND, NE, NV, NY, OH, OK, OR, PA, SC, SD, TN, TX, VA, WI, and WV.

Denver, CO-based VICORP RESTAURANTS INC (founded 1958) has increased 4 units for their Village Inn concept, from 260 to 264 (2% growth) and has decreased 2 units for the Bakers Square concept, from 148 to 146 (1% downsizing). Overall company increase was from 408 to 410. Both concepts are family/casual American restaurants, open for breakfast, lunch and dinner, with seating for about 150. Per person check average is about $6-$12. Units are in the states of AK, AR, AZ, CA, CO, FL, IA, IL, IN, KS, MI, MN, MO, ND, NE, NM, OH, OK, OR, TX, UT, VA, WA, WI, and WY. Less than 30% of locations are franchised.

Maitland, FL-based TIJUANA FLATS BURRITO COMPANY (founded 1995) has opened 4 units, from 48 to 52 (8% growth) and entered into the state of NC. The company also closed all 3 of their GA locations. This concept was last featured in our 3/6/07 newsletter, with a 7% downsizing. These are fast casual Mexican restaurants, serving beer and wine, with a per person check average of $4-$10. Locations are open for lunch and dinner, with seating for about 80. Catering is available. Units are in the states of FL, IN, NC, PA, and VA. Between 40 and 50% of locations are franchised, with no new franchise opportunities being offered at this time.

Lorton, VA-based FIVE GUYS BURGERS & FRIES (founded 1986) has opened 53 units, from 130 to 183 (41% growth) and entered into the states of IN, OH, and TN, in addition to an AL location scheduled to open soon. Other trading areas are CT, DC, DE, FL, GA, MD, NC, NJ, NY, PA, SC, and VA. We last featured this concept in our 2/13/07 newsletter (24% growth). The restaurants are a quick serve burger concept, open for lunch and dinner, with a $2-$6 per person check average. Seating is for about 50. More than 90% of locations are franchised.

Calgary, AB, Canada-based JUGO JUICE (founded 1998) has opened 8 units, from 66 to 74 (12% growth) and entered into the states of AZ and NV. We mentioned this concept in our 10/10/06 newsletter (8% growth, entered into the US). This quick serve juice/smoothie concept is open for breakfast, lunch and dinner hours, with a $2-$6 per person check average. Seating is for about 20. Locations are in the states of AZ, NV, and TX, and the provinces of AB, BC, NB, NS, ON, PQ, and SK.

Greenwood Village, CO-based MAUI WOWI HAWAIIAN COFFEE & SMOOTHIES (founded 1982) has opened 50 units, from 450 to 500 (11% growth) and entered into 9 new states (AR, CT, ME, NE, NM, OK, OR, UT, and WA). Other trading areas are AL, AZ, CA, CO, DC, DE. FL, HI, IL, IN, LA, MD, MI, MN, MO, MT, NC, ND, NJ, NV, NY, OH, PA, SC, TN, TX, VA, and WI. The restaurants are quick serve, offering coffee and juice smoothies for about $2-$6 per person. Meal periods are lunch and dinner. Seating is for about 20 to 30. More than 90% of units are franchised.
