Trading Area Expansion/Units Increased



Sterling Heights, MI-based JET’S PIZZA
has increased eight units over the period, from 118 to
126 locations now open, with the company having just
expanded in the state of OH. Other locations are in
FL, MI and NC. Founded in 1978, this
take-out/delivery pizza chain franchises more than
80% of their locations.


DICKEY’S BBQ PIT,
based out of Dallas, TX, has expanded into the state
of OK. The company has opened two locations over
the period, from 60 to 62, with plans to enter
Canada this summer by opening a location in
Kingston, Ontario. The restaurants have a check
average of $6-12 per person. They serve beer and
wine, and seat approximately 150. Founded in 1941,
they now have locations in CO, NJ, NM, OH, OK, TN,
and TX. Over 90% of locations are franchised.


 


Emerging Concepts

ARMADILLO WILLY'S , based in Los Altos,
CA has increased three units bringing their total to
12 locations (33% growth). The 125 seat family
style BBQ restaurant has a check average between $8
and $20. All locations are company owned and
located in CA.


SHORTY SMALL'S, of Oklahoma City, OK has
grown by 33% during the period. The privately owned
company founded in 1980 now has a total of eight
stores. Four full service family style units
averaging 300 seats and there are also four fast
casual units. The locations are currently in AR, KS,
MO and OK.

BURGER JOE’S of Marietta, GA has expanded
into Washington, DC bringing their total number of
outlets to four (two locations are franchised).
They opened their first location in 2002. The
take-out and delivery burger concept has three
locations in the Atlanta, GA area. The first DC
area location opened in May ’06. There are plans to
open more franchise locations later this year.

BIG TOWN HERO of Portland, OR has opened
their 45th store and expanded into TX. This quick
service sandwich chain now trades mostly in OR with
locations in CA, NV, WA and TX. There are plans to
open a location in MT soon. All locations are
franchised.



 

Units Decreased

Westmont, IL-based TIMBER LODGE
STEAKHOUSE of Bloomington, MN has filed for bankruptcy.
The company has now closed five of their Timber
Lodge Steakhouse locations. The upscale steakhouses average 300 seats with a check average of $10-
$30. They currently trade in MN, ND, SD and
NE. The company no longer has locations in IL, NY
and WI.

Florence, KY based SNAPPY TOMATO PIZZA
has decreased units. This franchise company acquired
ten locations from Pizza Magia last August ’05 and
converted them to Snappy Tomato units. They closed
seven locations over the last two four-month
periods. The pizza concept is mostly quick serve
averaging 30 seats. They also have some take-out
only locations as well as some buffet locations.
There are now 72 units in AL, FL, IN, KY, MD, MO, OH
& TN.


 

RE-emerging Concept

 

Richardson, TX-based WINGSTOP has
increased 20 units in the last four months, from 245
to 265 locations. The quick serve chicken wing chain
is open for dinner only and offers delivery. Locations
are about 1500 sq feet and more than 90% are
franchised. Restaurants operate in the states of AL,
AR, AZ, CA, CO, FL, GA, IL, IN, KY, LA, MD, MO, MS,
NC, NE, NM, NV, OH, OK, SC, TN, TX, VA, and
WI.

CULVER'S FROZEN CUSTARD &
BUTTERBURGERS of Prairie Du Sac, WI is growing
rapidly. The company has added on another five
units this period in addition to the 13 units they
opened last period. The 330 unit fast casual
concept average 90 seats with a check average of $2-
$6. The butterburger king has now moved into
KY. They currently have locations in CO, IL, IN, IA, KS, KY, MI,
MN, MO, NE, ND, OH, SD, TX, WI, and WY.
