Growing concepts

Newport Beach, CA-based ZPIZZA (founded 1986) has opened 7 units, from 51 to 58 (14% growth), while also closing 2 units, pulling out of the states of CO and VT. Restaurants are quick serve, with catering and online ordering available. Units seat about 30. Beer and wine is offered at some locations. More than 70% of locations are franchised. Trading areas are the states of AZ, CA, KS, MD, NC, NV, TN, and VA, with a location planned in Alpharetta, GA this spring.

Riverside, CA-based FARMER BOYS (founded 1981) has opened 2 units during the period, from 55 to 57 (4% growth). These family/casual American restaurants are open for breakfast, lunch and dinner, with a per person check average of $4-$10 and seating for about 150. More than 70% of locations are franchised. All units are in CA.

SHANE'S RIB SHACK has added another 12 units, from 40 to 52 (30% growth) and expanded into SC. The company is currently number 2 on April’s Top Ten fastest growing concept list. These are quick serve BBQ units that serve beer and have seating for about 70. Per person check average is about $3-$8 and catering and banquet services are available. Shane’s is a concept of Raving Brands. Locations are currently in AZ, FL, GA, KY, LA, NC, SC and TN.

La Verne, CA-based SHOGUN TEPPAN (founded 1980) has opened 2 units, from 4 to 6 (50% growth). This upscale Japanese concept is open for lunch and dinner, with a per person check average of $15-$30+ and seating for about 150. Restaurants have a full bar, catering, and banquet services. All locations are in CA.

Lake Forest, CA-based JOHNNY ROCKETS (founded 1986) has opened 8 units during the period, from 195 to 203 (4% growth). This company was previously reported on in our 6/13/06 newsletter as having had a 16-unit growth during that period (Feb ’06 to Jun ’06. However, during the period from June to October of 2006, the company had decreased 3 units. These family/casual burger restaurants are open for lunch and dinner, with a $4-$10 per person check average. All units are open for lunch and dinner, with seating for about 80-100. Some units serve beer and wine. More than 80% of locations are franchised. Trading areas are the states of AL, AZ, CA, CO, CT, DC, FL, GA, IL, IN, KY, MA, MD, MI, MN, MO, NJ, NM, NV, NY, OH, PA, RI, SC, TN, TX, VA, and WA, with 3 locations in Ontario, Canada, and multiple locations worldwide. The company has just been acquired by RedZone Capital Fund II, with plans to open 26 units over the next 3 years.
