Growing concepts

Miami, FL-based CHICKEN KITCHEN (founded 1983), has increased by 3 units, from 31 to 34 (10% growth). This company was previously featured in our 6/13/06 newsletter as also having had a 10% growth, as well as expansion into TX. These quick service restaurants are open for lunch and dinner, with a per person check average of $3-$8, and seating for about 60. Catering is available. Locations are in the states of FL and TX. About 80% of units are franchised.

Louisville, CO-based OLD CHICAGO (founded 1976), has increased by 5 units during the period, from 82 to 87 (6% growth) and expanded into the state of OK. The restaurants are family/casual pizza restaurants, with a full bar and seating for about 225. Per person check average is $6-$15+. Meal periods are lunch and dinner. Trading areas are AZ, CO, FL, IA, ID, IL, IN, KS, KY, MI, MN, MO, MT, NC, ND, NE, OK, OR, SD, TN, WI, and WY, with new locations to open this spring/summer in NY and OH. Less than 30% of units are franchised. Old Chicago is a concept of Rock Bottom Restaurants, which also owns Rock Bottom Brewery (30), Chophouse and Brewery (4), Sing Sing (2), and Walnut Brewery (1).

Chicago, IL-based T.A.G. RESTAURANTS (founded 1995), has opened 2 units for their American Dog concept, from 1 to 3. The company also operates Carnelli’s Deli (1), Kappy’s Pancake House (2), and Nino Panino (1). Overall company increase was from 5 to7 (40% company growth). American Dog, Carnelli’s, and Nino Panino are fast casual sandwich restaurants, with a per person check average of $2-6 and seating for about 50. Kappy’s seat about 150, with a $4-$10 per person check average. All locations are in IL. Catering, delivery and online ordering are available.

NED DEVINE'S GROUP of VA (founded 2001) has opened a new location in Centerville, VA, from 2 to 3 (50% growth). These are family/casual Irish pubs with full bar, seating for about 200 and a per person check average of about $8-$20. Units feature sports and entertainment. Banquets are offered including rental of the entire restaurant. Locations are company owned and all are in VA.

JUICE IT UP of Irvine, CA (founded 1995) has increased by 5 units, from 118 to 123 (4% growth). We last reported on this take-out juice/smoothie company in our 11/15/06 issue of our newsletter when they had 19% growth and expanded into TX. During the last three periods the company has grown from 92 to 123 units (33% one year growth). Locations are more than 90% franchised and are in AZ, CA, FL, TN, TX and WA.
