A weekly newsletter covering public and private restaurant chains featuring under-reported unique facts relating to growth. Pertinent information is gathered, verified and analyzed in-house using proprietary methods created in our research and library departments. Only Restaurant Chain personnel in our database receive a private, unabridged version of the newsletter including 11-14 alerts stories per week. All others receive an abridged version with the first 4 to 5 stories issued per week.

 

Growing concepts

St Louis, MO-based BANDANA'S BAR-B-Q (founded 1996), has opened 2 new locations, from 19 to 21 (11% growth) and expanded into the state of IA. Other trading areas are CO, IL, and MO. These family/casual barbeque restaurants are open for lunch and dinner, with a per person check average of $8-$20, serving beer and wine. Locations seat about 150. Catering service is available. Less than 20% of units are franchised.

Stuart, FL-based HURRICANE GRILL & WINGS (founded 1995), has increased by 4 units, from 8 to 12 (50% growth). Restaurants are family/casual, serving beer and wine, with seating for about 125. Per person check average is $6-$12. Locations are open for lunch and dinner. More than 90% of units are franchised. All locations are in FL, with GA and NV units in planning stages.

Mt Pleasant, SC-based WILD WING CAFÉ (founded 1990), has increased by 2 units during the period, from 22 to 24 (9% growth), and now has locations in TX. Restaurants are family/casual, with a per person check average of $6-$15. All locations are open for lunch and dinner, with full bar service. Catering facilities are available at all restaurants. Units are in the states of GA, NC, SC, TX, and VA, with a Tampa, FL location opening this spring. More than 60% of locations are franchised.

Vancouver, British Columbia-based MR MIKE'S STEAKHOUSE & BAR (founded 1960), has increased by 2 units, from 7 to 9 (29% growth). This chain was last featured in our 10/17/06 newsletter as having a 40% growth. These steakhouses are family/casual style, open for lunch and dinner, with a per person check average of $10-$30. Restaurants serve a full bar and have seating for about 200. Locations are in the provinces of AB and BC. More than 50% of locations are franchised.

IT'S A GRIND COFFEE HOUSE of Long Beach, CA (founded 1994) has increased by 12 units from 94 to 106 (13% growth) and entered into the states of KY and NJ. We have previously highlighted this company in our 6/13/06 newsletter (16% growth) and our 11/15/06 newsletter (11% growth). There has been a one-year total of 33 new units (45% one-year growth). The cafes are quick serve, and have per person check averages of $2-$6. Average location seats 40 (1250 sq ft) and catering service is available. Locations are currently in AZ, CA, CO, CT, FL, GA, KY, MI, MO, NC, NJ, NV, TN, TX and UT. More than 90% of locations are franchised.

Newsletter anniversary facts

February ’07 marked our first anniversary of publishing the Alerts Newsletter. During the year we highlighted 320 concepts.43 of them have been written about more than once (the consistent movers and shakers). In addition, we reported on 117 companies with trading area expansions and/or pullouts.
Our re-verification process takes place three times per year and allows us to keep you up to date with chain activity.

In the past months we have been noticing the proliferation of "link farms."

They are websites used by sham companies who are using registered trademarked names to drive users to click on ads placed by search engines like google or yahoo.

This has now popped up in the restaurant space. As a free service to restaurant chains we are launching a service to combat this issue.

As we perform restaurant market research using the internet, in combination with key words that searchers use to come to our Restaurantchains.net website, we found we are able to find abusers and infringers of restaurant names.

Whenever this occurs we will notify you of the website(s) who seem to be scamming by using your protected, respected brand name.
