A weekly newsletter covering public and private restaurant chains featuring under-reported unique facts relating to growth. Pertinent information is gathered, verified and analyzed in-house using proprietary methods created in our research and library departments. Only Restaurant Chain personnel in our database receive a private, unabridged version of the newsletter including 11-14 alerts stories per week. All others receive an abridged version with the first 4 to 5 stories issued per week.

 

Growing concepts

Kennesaw, GA-based STEVI B'S PIZZA (founded 1996), has increased by 4 units, from 22 to 26 (18% growth). This concept was previously mentioned in our very first Restaurantchains.net Alerts Newsletter on 2/14/06 as having had a 33% growth. These buffet-style pizzerias are open for lunch and dinner, with seating for about 175. All locations are franchised. Restaurants are in the states of AL, FL, GA, OH, PA, SC, and TN.

Chicago, IL-based POTBELLY SANDWICH WORKS (founded 1977), has increased by 14 units, from 123 to 137 (11% growth). This chain was previously mentioned in our 10/17/06 alerts newsletter as having an 11% growth rate during that period as well. Restaurants are quick service sandwich shops, with a per person check average of $3-$8 and seating for about 40. Catering and delivery are available. Locations are in DC, IL, IN, MD, MI, MN, OH, TX, VA, and WI, with a PA location opening this spring.

BLUE COAST BURRITO based in Nashville, TN (founded 2000) has increased by 2 units from 8 to 10 (25% growth). We first wrote about this company in our 10/2/06 newsletter when they had 33% growth. These are fast casual locations with seating for about 80, and a per person check average of about $3-$8. Locations are in AR and TN and there is a second one-unit concept called Baja Burrito. All units are franchised.

Newport Beach, CA-based FLEMING'S PRIME STEAKHOUSE (founded 1998), has increased by 3 units, from 42 to 45 (7% growth) and expanded into the states of MI, PA, and WI. Other trading areas are AL, AZ, CA, CO, FL, GA, IA, IL, IN, LA, MA, MD, MO, NC, NE, NJ, NV, OH, OK, TN, TX, UT, and VA. This concept was previously mentioned in our 9/26/06 newsletter as having had a 5% growth, and expanding into NC. These steak and seafood restaurants are upscale, with a per person check average of $15-$50+, open for dinner hours only. Banquet services are available at all locations. Fleming’s is a subsidiary of Tampa, FL-based OSI Restaurants.

Scottsdale, AZ-based PF CHANG'S CHINA BISTRO(NASDAQ: PFCB) (founded 1993), has increased by 15 units for the PF Chang’s concept, from 137 to 152, 19 units for Pei Wei Asian Diner, from 88 to 107, and added a third concept called Taneko Japanese Tavern in Scottsdale, AZ (1 unit). Overall company increase is 225 to 260 units (16% company growth). Restaurants are family/casual Asian concepts, with a per person check average of $10-$30 and seating for about 250. All locations have a full bar and are open for lunch and dinner. Trading areas are AL, AR, AZ, CA, CO, FL, GA, HI, IA, ID, IL, IN, KS, KY, LA, MA, MD, MI, MN, MO, NC, NE, NJ, NM, NV, NY, OH, OK, OR, PA, SC, TN, TX, UT, VA, WA, and WI.

In the past months we have been noticing the proliferation of "link farms."

They are websites used by sham companies who are using registered trademarked names to drive users to click on ads placed by search engines like google or yahoo.

This has now popped up in the restaurant space. As a free service to restaurant chains we are launching a service to combat this issue.

As we perform restaurant market research using the internet, in combination with key words that searchers use to come to our Restaurantchains.net website, we found we are able to find abusers and infringers of restaurant names.

Whenever this occurs we will notify you of the website(s) who seem to be scamming by using your protected, respected brand name.
