Growing concepts

GRAND TRAVERSE PIE CO based in Traverse City, MI (founded 1996) has increased by 2 units from 7 to 9 (29% growth). Stores are fast casual, bakery cafes with seating for about 30 (1000 sq ft) and a per person check average of $3-$8. Locations are 89% franchised and all locations are in MI. There are plans to open 2 new locations in Grand Rapids, MI and 5 new locations in IN during 2007.

LEDO PIZZA based in Annapolis, MD (founded 1955) has increased by 5 units from 75 to 80 (7% growth). These are family/casual Italian-pizza restaurants that serve full bar with seating for about 90 (2000 sq ft) and a per person check average of around $6-$12. There are units in DC, DE, FL, GA, MD, NC, VA and WV. All locations are franchised.

PLUTO'S FRESH FOODS based in San Francisco, CA (founded 1995) has increased by 2 units, from 6 to 8 (33% growth). The restaurants are fast casual and serve lunch and dinner. Catering services are offered. They serve beer and wine with seating for about 150 and a per person check average of between $4-$10. All locations are company owned and located in CA.

Brighton, MA-based BICKFORD’S FAMILY RESTAURANTS (founded 1959), has increased by 8 units, from 33 to 41 (24% growth). This company was featured in our 2/28/06 newsletter issue as having had a 12 unit decrease (27% downsizing). Restaurants are family casual, open for breakfast, lunch and dinner, with a per person check average of $6-$15+. Units seat about 150. Restaurants offer catering and banquet facilities. Trading areas are CT, MA, NH, RI, and VT.

Roswell, GA-based MITTIE’S CAFÉ & TEA ROOM has increased by 2 units during the period, from 3 to 5 (67% growth). Locations are family casual, with a per person check average of $3-$8. Meal periods are breakfast and lunch only. Units seat about 50. Catering, delivery, and private party facilities are available. All locations are in GA.

Lakeland, FL-based CRISPERS FRESH SALADS & SUCH (founded 1989), has increased by 5 units, from 36 to 41 (14% growth). Restaurants are fast casual, with a per person check average of $6-$12, and seating for about 100. Catering service is available. All locations are in FL.

Broomfield, CO-based NOODLES & CO (founded 1995), has increased by 7 units, from 130 to 137 (5.4% growth). These fast casual restaurants are open for lunch and dinner, serving Asian, Mediterranean, and American cuisines. Locations seat about 150, and have a per person check average of $6-$12. Beer and wine is served. Trading areas are CA, CO, IL, IN, KS, MD, MI, MN, MO, NE, OR, UT, VA, and WI, with a location opening in OH later this year. More than 90% of locations are company owned.

Tampa, FL-based MELTING POT restaurants (founded 1975), has increased by 5 units, from 108 to 113 (3.7% growth) and expanded into the state of AL. Other territories are AZ, CA, CO, CT, DC, DE, FL, GA, ID, IL, IN, KY, LA, MA, MD, MI, MN, MO, NC, NE, NJ, NM, NV, OH, OK, OR, PA, SC, TN, TX, UT, VA, WA, and WI. Restaurants feature an upscale, Eastern European fondue menu, with a per person check average of around $40. Meal periods are dinner only. Locations seat about 200, with banquet facilities available. All locations are individually owned and operated.

Northglenn, CO-based WINGMAN restaurants (founded 1981), has increased by 1 unit, from 4 to 5 (25% growth) and expanded into the state of NJ. Other locations are in CO. Restaurants are quick serve, open for lunch and dinner, with a per person check average of $3-$8. Beer is served. Units seat about 50. More than 70% of locations are franchised. Catering service is available.

 

Decreased units

IL FORNAIO of Corte Madera, CA (founded 1981) has decreased by 2 units from 23 to 21 (8% concept downsizing). These are upscale Italian restaurants with a full bar, seating for about 225 (6000 sq ft) and a per person check average of about $15-$30. They also operate another upscale concept called, Canaletto Ristorante Veneto (1 unit). All locations offer banquets and catering. Restaurants are currently located in CA, CO, NV and WA.

HAL SMITH RESTAURANT GROUP of Norman, OK (founded 1987) has sold their 3 unit, Coach’s concept. Stores are family/casual and have seating for about 200 (5000 sq ft), with a check average of about $18 per person. The company now operates 30 restaurants: Boomerang Grill (3), Charleston's Restaurant (13), Louie's (7), Mahogany Prime Steakhouse (3), Pearl's Lakeside Seafood (1), Redrock Canyon Grill (2) and Toby Keith's I Love This Bar & Grill (1). Locations are in AZ, IN, KS, NE, OK and TX.

COUSINS SUBS of Menomonee Falls, WI (founded 1972) has decreased by 10 units, from 165 to 155 (6% decrease). These are quick serve sandwich shops with seating for about 20 (1000 sq ft) and a check average of about $2-$6 per person. The stores are 90% franchised and located in AZ, CA, IL, IN, IA, MI, MN, MO, ND, TX and WI. The company no longer trades in CO.
