Emerging Concepts,companies/Trading area expansions

Allendale, MI-based PEPPINO’S PIZZA (founded 1976), has increased 2 units, from 10 to 12 (20% growth). Locations are quick service Italian/pizzeria restaurants, open for lunch and dinner, with a per person check average of between $4-10. Units seat about 50 (1500 sq ft), with catering and delivery services offered. Between 50% and 60% of locations are franchised. All locations are in MI.

Addison, TX-based NEIGHBORHOOD VENTURES INC (founded 1995), has increased 4 units for their Fish City Grill concept, from 7 to 11 (57% growth). They have entered into the states of OK and AR. Other locations are in TX. Locations are family casual seafood restaurants, with full bar service, and a per person check average of $6-$15+. The restaurants have seating for about 80 (2000 sq ft), and are open for both lunch and dinner. The company also owns the Half Shells Oyster Bar (1 unit) and the Half Shells Seafood Grill (1). About half of locations are franchised. A new Fish City Grill location is scheduled to open in Georgetown, TX in January ’07.

HOMEMADE PIZZA CO of Chicago, IL has increased from 7 to 10 units (43% growth) during the period. Locations are take-out and open for lunch and dinner with a check average of $2-$6 per person. The units are company owned and located in IL.

Glenview, IL-based RESTAURANTS AMERICA (founded 1990), has increased 6 units for their Bar Louie concept, from 19 to 25 (32% concept growth) and 1 unit for Bluepoint Oyster Bar, from 5 to 6. The company has also added 2 new concepts (Midtown Kitchen & Bar-1 unit and Townhouse-1 unit). The company has closed 2 units for the Red Star Tavern concept, from 14 to 12, and also closed the Twisted Fork concept (1 unit). Overall, the company has increased by 6 units, from 44 to 50. During the period, Restaurants America has pulled out of the states of MD and TX, but has entered into the states of WI, MI, and CO due to the expansion. Other trading areas are AL, AZ, FL, IL, IN, KY, MO, OH, PA, SC, and VA. Locations are mainly upscale, with a per person check average of $10-$30. Average units seat about 200 (5000 sq ft). The company also has a catering and private party service called Events America. Concepts include: Bar Louie (25), Bluepoint Oyster Bar (6), Extra Virgin (1), Grillroom (1), Midtown Kitchen & Bar (1), One North (1), Red Star Tavern (12), Stonefish Grill (1), Townhouse (1), and Virgin Lounge (1).

KFC franchisee, ZANCANELLI MANAGEMENT CORP based in Grand Junction, CO has acquired 13 new KFC locations in NE, from 30 to 43 (43% concept growth). Locations are currently in CO, IA, IL, IN, MO and NE. The company also owns 1 Boston’s The Gourmet Pizza unit.

KEG STEAKHOUSE & BAR based in Richmond, BC has increased by 2 units, from 93 to 95 (2% growth). These are family/casual steakhouses with seating for about 250 (7000 sq ft). Units are open for lunch and dinner with full bar and a per person check average of $10-$30. They are currently located in AB, AZ, BC, CO, MB, NL, NS, ON, OR, PQ, SK, TX and WA. Locations are about 50% franchised.

HYDE PARK RESTAURANT SYSTEMS based in Twinsburg, OH (founded 1988) has added a unit to it’s Hyde Park Prime Steakhouse concept, from 8 to 9 locations (13% concept growth). The company now has 12 units. These upscale steak and seafood restaurants are equipped with a full bar, seating for about 175 (4000 sq ft) and a per person check average of $15-$50+. Corporate locations consist of Blake's Seafood Grill (2), Hyde Park Prime Steakhouse (9), and Metropolitan Café (1). The company has now expanded into PA; all other locations are in OH.
